Sensitivity of Inventory Difference

Under safeguards a set of protective measures and controls are prescribed to meet the security requirements, by ensuring a state of inviolability from hostile acts or influences and by preventing unauthorized persons from having access.

All civil facilities dealing with nuclear material have to declare :

  • their basic technical characteristics with a description of the installation and of the accountancy system
  • an outline of the activities inclusive the physical inventory taking and verification
  • all particular safeguards provisions inclusive the designation of material balance areas and key measurement points the reporting system with the accounting records, which show all inventory changes with all measurement and counting results and all corrections
  • the operating records, which show the quantities and composition of nuclear material
  • the inventory change report, which gives batch data with identification of the materials received and shipped
  • the physical inventory listing and material balance report
  • the transfer of materials (import/export with country of destination)

The calculation of the inventory difference for a nuclear facility is of high importance. The sensitivity of the inventory difference to measurement errors or structure of material balances is not negligible. This software illustrates by examples. The user may also train himself by setting up his material balance areas and defining the instrumentation of his key measurement points and by looking at the influence of measurement procedures and instrumentation errors.
